Earlier today I mentioned on Twitter:

As we’ve turned off commenting for some @vineandfigco Insta posts, people turn to our DMs to show how much they can’t keep it in their theological pants. People, I’m a Black Catholic dyke. We 👏🏽 serve 👏🏽 different 👏🏽 theologies 👏🏽. You don’t have to try to dominate me. It’s okay.

I continue to be surprised by people who find it necessary to send messages detailing how wrong it is for Vine & Fig to twist God’s words, to lie to people about the nature of Scripture, to send people to hell by making them go astray as they fall deep into the pit of “same-sex attraction”. These are convictions founded on principles we tend to overlook in defining what it means to be a Christian.

  • They assume I believe that the Jewish Tanakh and the Christian New Testament are the literal Word of God. I don’t.
  • They assume I think there is any way for any person, lay or ordained, to know what God thinks or says. I don’t.
  • They assume I think Scriptures were written by people who could reasonably speak for everyone including communities of color, womxn, and LGBTQIA+ individuals. I don’t.
  • They assume that my Christianity exists in an ahistoric vacuum. It doesn’t.
  • They assume that I love Jesus because he died on the cross for my sins and was resurrected. I don’t.

It’s okay with me that you may think I’m not a Christian. I don’t want to be saved by your version of Jesus as a result of you spreading your version of the Gospel to me. I don’t want to take anything from you. I just don’t want what you’re selling. And I don’t want you to take anything from me. And that’s okay.
